Luke is the oldest Maddison sibling — Meg tells the Priestess "Luke's the oldest – he's twenty," and a Guardia officer describes him as "a man of about nineteen, clean shaven, dark hair." The novel does not give a detailed physical description beyond this. The narration notes that Luke is about the same size as Raf, which allows the fishermen to provide him with Altierran clothing: a woollen tunic, baggy loose-fitting trousers, slightly worn boots, and a sleeveless cloak.

Before crossing into Altierra he wears jeans and trainers. At college, he was studying — the novel opens with him "anticipating three weeks with no projects, lectures or computers," planning to work at the local pub for extra money.
