She was in charge of a group of men in another world. She could not rely on the authority of Spain or the King any longer, and she realised that she could easily be replaced by others who were physically stronger. But she knew that a religion is the best way to secure people's loyalty - they are loyal to the religion not the person. They would even die for it.

It was important for Aldonza that the religion would be very different for Catholicism. If it was seen simply as a variety of Christianity, it would be difficult for her to lead it as females are not allowed to be priests. So she made the sacred number five, with a pantheon of five gods,a pentagon as a symbol, and five ranks for the castes. She created four castes - the Priestesses as leaders, Handmaidens as personal servants, army as subordinates, as slaves.
