			There's a neat answer sitting right there in the material you've already built, and it's more satisfying than "five just felt right": the number maps directly onto the caste structure she was engineering, and probably grew out of it rather than being chosen first.

			Look at the portfolios again. Alturión is the creator — the abstract, distant authority that legitimises hierarchy as cosmic fact rather than human invention. Lunara is explicitly the goddess of the Priestesses, which makes her rule doctrinally inevitable rather than merely military. Velessa is the handmaiden — a goddess whose entire identity is service to a superior, which is exactly the position Aldonza needed the Criada caste to accept without resentment. Solvár protects, which gives the Guardia a divine mandate for violence that isn't self-interested. And Ruvén serves, full stop, which is the theology she needed to hand to a slave caste descended from her own former colonists — people who a generation earlier would have had their own church and their own God, and who needed a new one that told them servitude was sacred rather than imposed.

			So it isn't five gods and then five ranks as a coincidence. It's one god per social function she needed to sanctify. Every caste, on being told the Pantheon, hears a god who is like them — which is far more effective propaganda than a single deity who simply commands obedience from above. A slave taught that Ruvén exists, and that Ruvén's whole nature is to serve, isn't being told servitude is punishment. She's being told it's ontology. That's a much harder thing to rebel against than a rule.

			There's also a colder, more personal reason that fits Aldonza as you've drawn her — a woman who survived a colonial catastrophe rather than one who arrived at the height of her confidence. A single all-powerful god is a god who can fail you, and by her own history, hers did — Divara's predecessor evidently didn't save the colony she came from. A fractured pantheon is safer theology for a survivor: no single point of failure, no single betrayal to account for when the harvest fails or the fleet sinks. If Lunara's favour falters, you can still appeal to Solvár. It's the same design principle as her social hierarchy — always a rung above you to answer to, always one below to enforce it — pushed up into the metaphysics. She built redundancy into her gods for the same reason she built layers into her Guardia and Bestia: because she'd already seen what happens when the one thing you trusted absolutely gave way.

			And there's a smaller, more practical reason worth keeping, given how deliberately constructed the whole religion is: five is pedagogically convenient. It's enough to feel comprehensive — a whole cosmos accounted for — without being unmemorable to a five-year-old novice at Sometria reciting the Pantheon by rote. Three would have felt thin, and worse, would have echoed the Trinity of the very faith the English colonists brought with them, which is presumably exactly the resonance Aldonza wanted to avoid when building something that had to feel indigenous to Altierra rather than a rebranding of what she'd fled.

			The detail I'd flag as a genuinely useful hook, if you want it: the Bestia get four of the five colours, denied grey. If grey belongs to the Priestesses' own internal hierarchy in a way the Handmaidens also don't fully hold, that exclusion could be read in-world as theological rather than administrative — the Bestia are permanently denied completeness, denied the fifth colour the way they're denied their own patron god's full glory, kept one short of the whole Pantheon as a caste. That would give you a lovely piece of Sometria doctrine: a novice being taught that five is sacred completeness, and Bestia only ever touch four of it, and being made to feel that absence as a kind of moral tidiness rather than an injustice.

			Aldonza needed to move away from the one God so she needed multiple deities. Two would be too similar to God/Jesus, and three too similar to the Trinity.

			Five turned out to be suitable because it reflects the castes. Alturión is the supreme god, beyond the others. Then there would be one god for the priestesses, one for the handmaidens, one for the military and the final for the slaves.

			The colours of the ranks were determined by the rainbow. The lowest rank was brown, indicating unstained leather; hence the Priestess, Handmaiden or Slave are not qualified to wear a colour.

Spanish society was fiercely patriarchal and she knew she would face a challenge for her leadership at some point. She decided that the best way to preserve her position was to make it religious. A religious leader is less likely to be challenged.

			But Catholicism was not suitable. There were no female priests, and nuns are not leaders. So she decided to create a new religion with female priests and handmaidens to support them. She was able to distance herself from Catholicism by attacking the Protestant religion of the English.
