He is steady, observant and hard to rattle, and he prefers plans that are realistic, discreet and based on local knowledge. He has a protective streak, especially toward his family and guests, but he is not sentimental about danger.

			He is a hard-working fisherman and trader who has built his life around crab fishing and keeping his household and business running. He understands the risks of helping the Maddisons, yet he does so anyway, accepting the danger as part of resistance. He is not a romantic rebel; he is the sort of man who “pokes the giant” because he believes it is worth doing, even if victory seems unlikely.
