			Toia's speech is the most fully naturalised Bestia register in the novel. Unlike Nena, whose conditioning sits awkwardly on her and who shows cracks of curiosity, Toia's Altierran formal speech is her only language — she has never known another. Her deference is not learned but native, and this makes it more fluent, more matter-of-fact, and ultimately more chilling than Nena's halting petitions.

			She generally avoids contractions. "I do not", "It is not", "I am" — her deferential speech tends toward formal, uncontracted phrasing, not because she is performing formality but because this is the only register she has ever been taught. This contrasts with Nena, who occasionally contracts when reporting facts; Toia's formality is more complete and consistent.

			Her speech is factual and explanatory. When Meg asks about the calendar, Toia explains patiently: "It is the Vigil of the Shadows. It starts at sundown and lasts until two hours before midnight at this time of year." She does not speculate, offer opinions, or embellish. She reports what she knows as though reading from a manual — which, in a sense, she is, since all her knowledge comes from Bestia education.

			She accepts her status without resentment or self-pity. "We low Bestia are normally available to any man or woman to enjoy," she says, as plainly as describing a work assignment. When Meg is horrified that Paco used her, Toia corrects the framing: "No, I was pleasuring him." She does not understand Meg's outrage because the concept of consent — the idea that her body belongs to her — has never been part of her world-view. Her speech on this subject is the novel's most quietly devastating illustration of how completely the system erases personhood.

			She uses the correct forms of address automatically — Doncella, Doña, Maestra — and never stumbles over rank or title. Where Meg hesitates and is corrected, Toia's usage is flawless. She demonstrates the Letanía with the ease of someone reciting something she has known since childhood, because she has.

			She has moments of genuine emotion that break through the conditioning. Her delight at being chosen to go to Alta is uncontainable: "Did you hear that, Calida? Did you hear what she said? I cannot believe we are going to Alta. Can you believe it? Are you not excited?" This is the most animated Toia ever becomes — and even here, her excitement is not for freedom or adventure, but for the privilege of serving in a more important place. The system has so thoroughly shaped her that even joy is framed in terms of service.

			Her anxiety, when it surfaces, is always about obedience rather than safety. When she asks for a candle for Meg without permission, her fear is not of punishment itself but of having broken a rule: "I should have asked a tutor first." Her moral framework is entirely rule-based — right and wrong are defined by permission, not by consequence or compassion.

			She rarely speaks in the first person about her own feelings or desires. Her "I" statements are almost always about her role: "I was pleasuring him", "I have not seen you around", "I asked without permission". 			Toia is defined by the completeness of her conditioning. Unlike Nena, whose indoctrination is slowly eroding, or BRisa, who retains a sense of self beneath the compliance, Toia has internalised the Bestia system so thoroughly that it is not a mask but her genuine world-view. When Meg is shocked that the Bestia Paco can use Toia sexually at will, Toia corrects her: "No, I was pleasuring him." She does not see herself as a victim because the concept does not exist within her framework — a Bestia's body is not her own, and use of it is not violation but function. "We low Bestia are normally available to any man or woman to enjoy," she explains, as factually as if describing the weather. She was born into this: "Yes. This has always been my life."

			She is Meg's first guide to Altierran life. At Rocosa, she brings food, answers questions about the calendar and customs, and explains the hierarchy of Bestia ranks with patient, unquestioning acceptance. When Meg calls the Priestess harsh, Toia gently corrects her: "It is not for us to question the purposes of our betters. If she seemed harsh, there must have been good reason." This is not performative deference — she genuinely believes it. "It is not my task to think," she says, and means it.

			She is loyal to Meg in the only way she knows how: within the system. She asks a Light Monitor to bring Meg a candle, then immediately worries: "I asked without permission. I should have asked a tutor first but I could not find one. If the Light Monitor told them, I would be in so much trouble." Her kindness operates within the boundaries of obedience — she wants to help, but cannot conceive of doing so outside the rules.

			At Sometria, she serves as Meg's attendant and Maricella's demonstration example. She recites the Letanía de las Bestia perfectly — "I have no will. My body is not mine. I am shaped by obedience. I am cleansed by pain. I am Bestia and live to serve" — and her recitation is described as meaning every word "from the depths of her heart". She demonstrates the poses — sumisa (submissive) and castigo (punishment) — without hesitation or embarrassment. When Meg makes mistakes in recitation, it is Toia who is struck: the strap falls on her palm, and she reacts "with just a slight but silent wince". She takes this punishment without complaint, and when Meg apologises, Toia sees a purpose in it: "There must be a reason for the Doña punishing me. They do not do anything without a purpose but such matters are beyond my knowledge."

			Her most tender moment comes during Meg's pillory punishment. Maricella orders Toia to cut off Meg's ponytail — a punishment that is also a marking, stripping away a visible sign of her identity. Toia collects the hair in a cloth bag, and as she passes Meg, "she caressed her cheek with her fingers." It is the only physical affection she shows in the novel — a gesture so small and so risky that Maricella may not even have noticed it, but which reveals a depth of feeling that the Bestia system does not acknowledge and cannot suppress.

			Her death is the novel's most devastating moment. When Meg tries to escape and Maricella appears in the doorway, she orders: "Toia. Come to me. That is an order." For a second, it looks as if Toia might refuse — but then she pulls free from Meg and rushes to the tutor's side, obeying as she has always done. Maricella, however, does not want obedience; she wants leverage. She drops her strap, picks up a heavy stone from the broken wall, and orders Toia to kneel. Toia obediently kneels, head bowed. Maricella holds the stone over her and threatens Meg: "Return to me now, Calida, or she will die." As Susan and Luke back Meg away towards the woods, Maricella brings the stone down. Luke and Susan drag Meg away as she screams for her fallen friend, and Alucio hoists Meg over his shoulder to carry her through the woods. Meg later says, devastated: "I didn't think she would. I should never have gone back for her." Nena confirms bluntly: "They would have killed her anyway."

			Toia's tragedy is not that she was rebellious, but that she was not. She obeyed the order to return. She knelt when told to kneel. And the system killed her anyway — not for defiance, but as leverage against someone else. She is the novel's proof that the Bestia system does not protect even those who serve it most faithfully.

			In summary: gentle, loyal, completely conditioned, and ultimately destroyed by the very system she never questioned. She is the character who most embodies the cost of slavery — not through dramatic resistance, but through the quiet erasure of a person who never had the chance to become one.
