Toia is a Bestia Plena who becomes one of Meg Maddison's closest friend during her captivity at Rocosa and Sometria. She is the novel's most fully realised Bestia character: a young woman who has never known anything other than slavery, who internalises its values completely, and whose death during Meg's escape attempt is the story's starkest indictment of the system that created her. Her tragedy is that she is the "perfect Bestia" — obedient, unquestioning, loyal — and the system kills her anyway, for a single moment of hesitation.
Appearance
Toia is a young Bestia woman, probably not far from Meg's age, though her exact age is unstated. The novel refers to her as a woman rather than a child. She was born a slave — "This has always been my life" — and has spent her entire existence within the Bestia system.
As a Bestia, she wears the standard slave garment: a white chemise. At Rocosa she serves as a low-ranked Bestia, a status she describes herself: "We low Bestia are normally available to any man or woman to enjoy." At Sometria she remains in Bestia clothing and is used by Maricella as an example for Meg's instruction.
The reference photo shows the following details not explicit in the novel text: long, dark brown, slightly wavy hair parted to one side and falling over both shoulders and down her back; dark brown eyes with a somber, contemplative expression, looking down and away; a heart-shaped face with a soft jawline, straight nose, and full neutral-toned lips; a fair, clear complexion with warm undertones; a slender, youthful build.
