Jesenia is the Alta Sacerdotisa — the High Priestess of Arbojan and the highest religious authority on the island. She is Meg Maddison's captor and ultimate authority, and the architect of her conditioning at Sometria. Yet she is also the novel's most complex antagonist: a woman who wields absolute power with measured intelligence rather than cruelty for its own sake, who occasionally feels the stirrings of compassion but always overrules them, and whose private moments — hating bath times, postponing hair-washing, showing rare tenderness to her confidante Socorra — reveal an isolation that her throne demands she conceal. She is the only antagonist with a named chapter, giving the reader access to her strategic mind and her private inner life.
