Jesenia is the Alta Sacerdotisa — the High Priestess of Arbojan and the highest religious authority on the island. She is Meg Maddison's captor and ultimate authority, and the architect of her conditioning at Sometria. Yet she is also the novel's most complex antagonist: a woman who wields absolute power with measured intelligence rather than cruelty for its own sake, who occasionally feels the stirrings of compassion but always overrules them, and whose private moments — hating bath times, postponing hair-washing, showing rare tenderness to her confidante Socorra — reveal an isolation that her throne demands she conceal. She is the only antagonist with a named chapter, giving the reader access to her strategic mind and her private inner life.

Appearance

Jesenia is described as resembling her Handmaiden Socorra — "the same high hairstyle; the same stern face but without the blemish of kindness; the same height but appearing greater through thinness." The "blemish of kindness" is a precise distinction: where Socorra's sternness carries a trace of warmth, Jesenia's does not. She appears taller than she is, a thinness that lends her an imposing physical presence reinforced by the throne she occupies.

Her hair is her most distinctive feature. It is styled in an intricate arrangement of braids, coiled and woven into a towering high hairstyle that serves as a visible marker of her rank. The maintenance is onerous: "One of the braids that formed her intricate hairstyle was loose and had already twice been replaced by her Handmaiden." She dreads the full washing process — which requires unwinding the entire structure and the labour of two Handmaidens — and postpones it "until it became unavoidable." In her bathing chamber, she wraps the hair in cloth to protect it, a small vanity that humanises her.

She wears the dark grey robes of the Priestess order, with blue rank colouring distinguishing her as Alta Sacerdotisa. She sits on a "majestic throne" in a hall of "orange-gold stone and columns" beneath the golden calcendi, the symbol of Illarion.

The reference photos show the following details not explicit in the novel text: dark espresso brown hair styled into an exceptionally tall, architectural bun of thick braids coiled and layered into a crown-like structure atop her head; warm hazel-brown eyes; a refined oval face with high sculpted cheekbones, a straight nose, and a well-defined jawline; a fair, clear complexion with a smooth matte finish; a slender build with a graceful neck. She wears a heavy black hooded cloak with edges trimmed in deep navy blue velvet ribbon. A distinctive gold nath-style jewellery piece connects a small gold hoop in her right ear to a matching hoop in her right nostril by a fine gold chain. In the formal portrait, her expression is stern, controlled, and authoritative, with a steady, unwavering gaze, set against a mottled dark grey-brown studio backdrop. In the second photo, she is captured looking back over her shoulder from a stone interior with an arched window, her expression more guarded and observant, with a bleak winter landscape of bare trees visible through the window under an overcast sky.
